momentary lapse of reason tour

A Momentary Lapse of Reason World Tour

In 1987, after years of lawsuits and fighting, Pink Floyd legally consisted of only David Gilmour and Nick Mason.  Gilmour and Mason had recently completed “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” on David’s newly purchased houseboat, The Astoria, with a group of session musicians.  This album was a huge departure, musically, from any previous Pink Floyd Album and one many consider to be a David Gilmour solo album, in as much as “The Final Cut” was a Roger Waters solo album.  (Waters described the album as “a pretty fair forgery”). After the years of fighting and only small solo tours (Gilmour) and no tours at all (Mason and Wright), Pink Floyd’s bank account was as low as it had likely ever been.  Pink Floyd had no idea how the new album would go over (a Roger Water-less Pink Floyd album was unthinkable to many in 1987), much less how successful a tour without Roger would be received.  Its reported that Nick Mason even sold off a few of his prized cars to finance what was supposed to be an 11 week tour of North American arenas to promote their new album.

Richard Wright was hired on as a paid member of the band, much like the other backing musicians, to further legitimize the new tour and it paid off in a big way.  Pink Floyd sold out all of the first 11 weeks of shows, so more shows were added, then more shows on top of that.  By 1988, the tour was dubbed the “World Tour” and Pink Floyd were now playing stadiums all around the world, with the same stage rig as the previous year.  Apparently, David, Nick and Rick were enjoying the tour (and, I’m sure, the new balances in their bank accounts) so much, that the tour was again extended into 1989 (this time called “Another Lapse”), returning to Europe and the UK.

“A Momentary Lapse of Reason” Tour Setlists

For the first twelve shows of the 1987 tour, the setlist consisted of the follwing:

Set I: Echoes, Signs Of Life, Learning To Fly, Yet Another Movie>Round and Around, A New Machine (Part 1), Terminal Frost, A New Machine (Part 2), Sorrow, The Dogs Of War, On The Turning Away
Set II: One Of These Days, Time>On The Run ,Wish You Were Here , Welcome To The Machine, Us And Them, Money>Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2), Comfortably Numb, One Slip, Run Like Hell
Encore: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5)

Gilmour then dropped “Echoes” from the setlist, moving “SOYCD” to the front of the first set and turned “One Slip” and “Run Like Hell” into the Encores (sadly, ”Echoes” was not to be played live again until his solo tour 19 years later, in 2006).  “Run Like Hell” would remain the at the end every Pink Floyd show from now throughout 1994′s Division Bell tour.  For the rest of 1987, this was the standard set:

Set I: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5), Signs Of Life, Learning To Fly, Yet Another Movie>Round and Around, A New Machine (Part 1), Terminal Frost, A New Machine (Part 2), Sorrow, The Dogs Of War, On The Turning Away
